What Can We Expect From The Avengers: Doomsday Teaser?

Two weeks ago, I wrote an article predicting what trailers would play in front of Avatar: Fire and Ash in mid-December. The first movie on that list was Avengers: Doomsday, due to it being the most popular release of next year but also the high likelihood we'd get our first look with James Cameron's epic. That has since been confirmed by multiple reliable outlets and now the anticipation for the first look is really building. There have been some small leaks alongside the chairs livestream in March, but this is really a film that is still so secretive. Besides what we can expect them to adapt from the Time Runs Out comic book, there's really still many unknowns when it comes to the plot of this film.

Knowing this, it felt right to write a little about what we are to expect from this first teaser. This is coming from some rumors, but also generally just my opinion based on what we've seen from the production process so far!

First Look at RDJ's Doctor Doom

The most obvious choice out of all the options for this teaser would be our first look at Robert Downey Jr as the titular villain Doctor Doom. This movie has essentially been put on the back of RDJ himself. The original announcement for this film featured the Russo Brothers unveiling him in front of a packed San Diego Comic Con crowd. Then with the chairs announcement back in March, he came out as the final chair in a long line of popular actors and characters. Additionally, Downey Jr. has released plently of behind the scenes photos on his social media throughout the production of the film. Add on the fact that his casting has already caused a divide among the fans and you see how he's clearly the main promotion for this film, for better or worse. With all of that and the fact that Doom's name is in the title of the film, it's clear that Marvel should focus on giving the fans exactly what they want with this first teaser.

Although there has been some leaked promotional art that may or may not be real, this should be our first chance to really see Doctor Doom's design in all its glory. The Fantastic Four: First Steps post credit scene showed us a part of his design, but nothing that will get fans cheering before the third Avatar installment starts rolling. Something that may make sense would be to hear RDJ narrate the trailer in his Doom voice, then ending it with a close up of his suit and design for the film. If rumors hold true, a lot of this movie will be Victor Von Doom pulling strings behind the scenes and pitting the main teams of the film against each other. Having him narrate the teaser would be a perfect way to showcase that idea. It also would allow for fans to get an idea of his dialogue, something that made Josh Brolin's Thanos so iconic in the previous two Avengers movies directed by the Russo Brothers. I wouldn't expect to get anything in depth about Doctor Doom's origin or why he looks exactly like Iron Man, but just some quick teases and insights into what we will see from our main villain of Doomsday.

The other most likely option for this teaser, assuming the entire thing isn't focused on Doctor Doom, would be seeing some of the characters that have already been confirmed for the film. The Fantastic Four were obviously featured in the most recent MCU film and have a storied history with Doom in the comics. Who knows if the rivalry with Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic (Pedro Pascal) will be explored in this adaptation, but it is generally expected that the foursome will be some of the main characters of this movie. Some merch leaks have confirmed that they will have slightly different suits for this movie, so seeing them use them in action is certainly possible. Then there's the Thunderbolts/New Avengers, who were also featured in Marvel's 2025 slate. Although we already got an extended look at their new designs in the post credit scene of that film, which could very well be an exact scene from Doomsday, seeing them in this teaser would also make sense. Lastly, although it's not a confirmed team, we may see a closer look at Sam Wilson/Captain America's (Anthony Mackie) Avengers team. We already had it teased at the end of both Thunderbolts* and Captain America: Brave New World, so it may be time to really reveal who this team consists of. Based on the chairs announcement I'd expect Captain America, Falcon (Danny Ramirez), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Black Panther (Letitia Wright), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), Winston Duke (M'Baku) and a few surprises.

The last prominent team would be the returning members from the Fox X-Men films. I put this in a separate category because this really would be a larger reveal than any of the other teams that we've already seen teased multiple times recently. Outside of Gambit (Channing Tatum) in Deadpool 3 and Beast (Kelsey Grammer) in The Marvels, it's been years since we've seen these cast members on screen. Considering they were confirmed in the initial casting announcement, we can expect that they have a supporting role at least in this movie. Getting a first look at the X-Men, maybe finally in some comic accurate costumes, would really allow this teaser to make some waves. I could see this being a stinger at the end of the trailer, with maybe Professor X (Patrick Stewart) or Cyclops (James Marsden) uttering the iconic To Me, My X-Men line. God, I have chills just thinking about that.

Surprises/Long Shots?

Those two categories are really what I'm going to confidently predict for what to expect from this first teaser. However, knowing Marvel, there may be one or two surprises that nobody expects until the trailer rolls. My first thought would go to some of the characters that are not officially confirmed by Marvel, but will be in the film based on reports from reliable outlets. Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell were confirmed all the way back in last December, so it's pretty clear that they've been involved with this film for a long time. Seeing his Captain America again, maybe in his perfect timeline with Peggy, would be a crazy reveal that would really tug on the heartstrings. Another one that's been confirmed by the trades has been Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool. This was expected after the immense popularity of Deadpool and Wolverine, but it remains to be seen how pivotal of a role he'd have in this film. I doubt he'd appear in this teaser, but something with him and maybe even Hugh Jackman's Wolverine (still yet to be rumored or confirmed) would make any theater go insane.

If we go on just rumors alone, that narrows things down to another bracket of people. The recent rumor is to do with Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man appearing. This is yet to be confirmed in any way, but it is being said by multiple reliable leakers. I highly doubt this would be something they'd feature in a first trailer, but you never know. The other one has been the appearance of Ghost Rider in the film, still with an unconfirmed actor. This one also feels like something they'd hide for the final product or at least later in the promotion. We can also look at some of the unconfirmed characters that just feel like locks to appear, like Captain Marvel or Doctor Strange, but it's really hard to predict any of them appearing without the knowledge that they've even been on set yet. It appears the reshoots in March may be used to add a lot of characters into the film, so we may not see the remainder of the cast until a full-length trailer.

How Long?

The final question to ask would be about the length of the trailer. We know the Russos and Marvel like to be very secretive with the marketing of their films, meaning that we can't expect anything huge in terms of length. The film doesn't come out for over a year, so this should be a teaser in every sense of the word. Disney has recently released 60-second teasers for both Toy Story 5 and The Devil Wears Prada 2, so that may be a number that we can look at when it comes to Doomsday. Marvel has done a strategy in the past where they start a trailer replaying old moments from previous films, eventually building to a short bit of new footage. Flashing back to the OG X-Men films and some of their 2025 slate, then showing a look at the new film, could allow for a longer teaser. However, I'd expect something very brief to just pull fans in before they really start to ramp up the marketing later next year.
