Avengers: Doomsday has wrapped filming. It is currently 452 days until the film releases on December 18th, 2026.
I have a million questions and I'm sure you do too. That's why I thought it would be a good time to step back to discuss a little about the production process of this film and where we can look next for more details as we head into 2026.
No Set Leaks

One refreshing thing about this filming process has been the lack of leaks from set. Especially with the flood of Spider-Man: Brand New Day leaks in only its first few weeks of production, it's a real relief that Doomsday avoided any major leaks. Sure, we've gotten a few things: a drone shot of what looks like the X-Mansion under attack, the Fantastic Four set being re-used and occasional merch leaks. However, none of this was anything major that would give away major details to the final product. I fall in the camp of wanting to be as surprised as possible when I sit down to watch a Marvel film. Set leaks are fun, but for a film of this scale I'd rather just get my details through the promo that Marvel chooses to release. The Russo Brothers themselves said that this film will be on a scale of epic proportions and that says to me that we should be experiencing those moments for the first time in the theater.
Scoops about the film from reliable leakers are a completely different story. We've had many leakers claiming they know significant details about the story and who will be in it. I think these people do know some things, but not everything. It really looks like Marvel has been able to throw off the scoopers when it comes to this film, with many of them already walking back on things they said when the production of this film started. We know they utilize fake scripts, names and stunt doubles whenever they can. This is all to say that you shouldn't believe every single thing the leakers, even the reliable ones, say on the internet. They may be totally truthful in saying that they heard, but those details may just be planted by Marvel to throw everybody off. We can't know anything for sure until we get more official details from Marvel Studios through a teaser or other promotion.
Wrap Picture? Chairs Part 2?

When we heard that filming was wrapping last week, many of us fans speculated that we would be getting some kind of announcement to commemorate it. After the Russo Brothers posted a cryptic photo to their Instagram last week (which looks like a blurry photo of Reed Richards' chalkboard), some speculated that they would post a photo of the set to celebrate filming ending. However, Friday came and went with nothing coming from either Marvel or the Russos. Now, there is somewhat of an external factor at play here. Due to the Jimmy Kimmel situation, we know Disney has held off on releasing any huge promo for their projects due to the backlash they've received. They delayed the Mandalorian and Grogu trailer and just generally are staying silent on most things. However, that trailer was released this morning, so it's unclear if Disney is still holding back on things. At this point, it may feel weird if they dropped a wrap photo considering it's already been a few days since things have finished. It's not impossible, but probably not likely either.
The next question comes on if we get any other huge announcements between now and the actual promo for the movie. When Marvel did the chair announcement back in March, it was an incredible success. It became one of the highest viewed livestreams in the history of social media and it left so many people discussing the movie that probably weren't before. Although there were many exciting reveals, many very popular names were left out to the confusion of us all. This left most fans to assume that a second livestream would be coming at some point, perhaps when filming wrapped. Now that filming is done, will we be getting a part two of cast announcements? To be honest, it's hard to say for sure. The reality is that they may just not have a ton of people to reveal. There's always a chance that 15-20 unrevealed cast members have been filming in secret for the past few months, but it really doesn't seem likely. Another chair announcement would make sense for the hype it would bring, but maybe not in terms of logistics.
Additional Photography Next Year

One of the few details we got from the announcement of filming wrapping was that the Russos were planning on doing additional photography next year before Doomsday releases in theaters. For those who are unaware, this is basically a period of reshoots. This is pretty standard for Marvel's Avengers movies, especially under the Russos. This period gives them time to reshoot or tinker with some of the scenes that they've already shot. However, a question came to my mind when hearing this: could this be a time for some new cast members to film their scenes? At this point we have to operate under the assumption that only the actors announced in March have filmed scenes, but maybe this new period of filming could give time for the actors who didn't get involved with the shoot this spring-summer-early fall. Which actors would that be? I would assume people like Brie Larson (Captain Marvel), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange), Tom Holland (Spider-Man), and Charlize Theron (Clea). I'm speaking with no knowledge of if they've done this kind of thing in the past, but it does add up. Most of those actors were busy with other projects this summer and a month of photography early next year could give them the chance to add more people to the cast.
Worried About The Film?

There's obviously been a large discourse online about Avengers: Doomsday ever since the movie was announced. People wanted them to stick with Kang (despite the actor who plays him being arrested on assault charges) and had worries that the return of Robert Downey Jr. was purely "nostalgia baiting". I pretty much completely disagree with those two things, but I will admit that I'm not without concern for this film. My concern boils down to two main points.
First, I'm worried they won't have the proper time to do this story justice. Jonathan Hickman's Secret Wars comic run, the basis for these upcoming films, was an entire experience played out over many years. They had an incredible amount of content, allowing for an entire setup for Doctor Doom and all the other players in the conflict. Although Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts* and Fantastic Four: First Steps have done some good setup for what's to come, it still doesn't feel like enough. The fact that we have only seen Doctor Doom in a 45 second post credit scene before he becomes the main villain of two movies just worries me. The Russos did a similar thing with Thanos, but it just feels different this time around because of how late the pivot from Kang to Doom was.

Second, I simply can't understand the suspected lack of other cast members for this movie. Sure, we will absolutely be getting more, RDJ himself confirmed that. But when I'm hearing that heroes like Doctor Strange and Captain Marvel may only have small roles, it really worries me. Those two in particuilar seem like main characters of this saga and just pushing them aside in favor of the FOX X-Men characters is really worrying. Don't get me wrong, I'm excited to see those X-Men and I think their inclusion in this story can be very captivating, but it shouldn't be at the risk of losing characters they've been building up for multiple projects. Are we ignoring the fact that Captain Marvel finished The Marvels on a quest to recover Monica from the supposed X-Men timeline? That Doctor Strange and Clea are apparently off stopping incursions right now? That the Champions/Young Avengers, led by Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) and Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), have been forming for the past 5 years? I just feel that it's a lot to explain if you leave some of these people out and I am significantly worried that will be the case.
However, I won't act like I have no hype or faith for this film. The Russo Brothers have never made a bad MCU movie, Robert Downey Jr. is a Marvel legend and the comic they are adapting is incredible source material to take from. I also think Kevin Feige and company understand how important this film is for the buy-in of their fans long term, meaning that we should be able to get a cinematic event worthy of our attention.
Let's just hope that event lives up to the massive hype!
